It was a tussle between the Woman of Jade and the River Spirit for the body of the Jade Bird lay slain between the stones by the river and the riverbed. With that being said, what happened to have caused the Jade Bird’s sudden meeting of its demise?
This May 18th & 19th, 2012, come by the Esplanade Concert Hall and catch The Flight of The Jade Bird (玉鸟飞), a modern fable birthed by Singapore’s very own, Mark Chan. This artistic production is especially commissioned as the opening show for the 2012 Singapore Arts Festival.
To illustrate, The Flight of the Jade Bird aim to link cultures, crossing dimensions between the material and the spiritual. It creates a dialogue among art forms to further encapsulate idea of contemporary ways and ancient cultural traditions. A jade bird is forced to choose between the gentle traditions of his upbringing and the crass modernity that now consumes humans.
The story opens with an ancient jade bird, the last of his kind. His mystical, mythical Jade Palace in an isolated part of the world is precious, not just for the privacy but also for the fierce protection it offers against the new world of industry and machines. Alas, even a fortress gives way after relentless assault. Before long, the jade bird uncovers a sly plot to turn his palace into a theme park.
A young boy arrives to learn about the authentic past from him. An unusual but endearing friendship forms amid the jade bird’s growing dilemma: Should he stay and fight the battle against vulgar materialistic change, or take off to join his brethren in a transcendental realm?
Mark Chan’s Operetta “The Flight of the Jade Bird” is a new commissioned work for the 2012 Singapore Arts Festival.
