Singapore Arts’ Festival Premiere: The Flight of The Jade Bird

It was a tussle between the Woman of Jade and the River Spirit for the body of the Jade Bird lay slain between the stones by the river and the riverbed. With that being said, what happened to have caused the Jade Bird’s sudden meeting of its demise?

This May 18th & 19th, 2012, come by the Esplanade Concert Hall and catch The Flight of The Jade Bird (玉鸟飞), a modern fable birthed by Singapore’s very own, Mark Chan. This artistic production is especially commissioned as the opening show for the 2012 Singapore Arts Festival.

To illustrate, The Flight of the Jade Bird aim to link cultures, crossing dimensions between the material and the spiritual. It creates a dialogue among art forms to further encapsulate idea of contemporary ways and ancient cultural traditions. A jade bird is forced to choose between the gentle traditions of his upbringing and the crass modernity that now consumes humans.

The story opens with an ancient jade bird, the last of his kind. His mystical, mythical Jade Palace in an isolated part of the world is precious, not just for the privacy but also for the fierce protection it offers against the new world of industry and machines. Alas, even a fortress gives way after relentless assault. Before long, the jade bird uncovers a sly plot to turn his palace into a theme park.

A young boy arrives to learn about the authentic past from him. An unusual but endearing friendship forms amid the jade bird’s growing dilemma: Should he stay and fight the battle against vulgar materialistic change, or take off to join his brethren in a transcendental realm?

Mark Chan’s Operetta “The Flight of the Jade Bird” is a new commissioned work for the 2012 Singapore Arts Festival.

Part Concert, Part Opera, Part Story-telling this musical treat tightly interwoven with Dance features a starry line-up of Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong origins.

Here is a clip to entice you and revel in a captivating fairy tale of epic proportions.

Exhibition from 1-29 June 2012 @Galeri Utama – Residue 2.0 by Marcel Heijnen

Exhibition – RESIDUE 2.0

Besides capturing Singapore, Residue 2.0 extends to Indonesia  and China. At least 12 completely new pieces will be featured  in this solo exhibition that will be held at Galeri Utama (open to  the public from 1-29 June 2012). In addition, works generated within Fort Canning Park specifically created for this exhibition, will be exclusively showcased.

PAINTED WITH A CAMERA

Marcel Heijnen’s “Residue 2.0” reflects the dual reality of organic and urban renewal. Dutch-born, Asia-based artist Marcel Heijnen’s works look like paintings but are actually photographs – unaltered, raw and provocative. Heijnen utilises an original method that he developed himself and mastered in the past few years.

Exploring the temporary nature of our everyday surroundings with urban decay as his focal point, Heijnen reveals that nothing lasts forever and it is this realisation that makes life precious and meaningful.

Residue 2.0 will be Heijnen’s biggest solo exhibition to date.

WHY 2.0?

2 is a significant number for Marcel Heijnen; he has been in Asia for 2 decades and is now witnessing Asia’s 2nd

coming. It is an intriguing time and opportunity to witness this renaissance of sorts. The region has an immensely rich history and cultural heritage, but is currently going through the motions of fast economic development and increased relevance in the world. Asia 2.0, so to speak.

2 is about duality as well. The old vs the new, urbanisation vs nature, the geometric vs the organic – these are all present in Heijnen’s unique photographic art.

In fact, all of Heijnen’s works consist of 2 realities combined  together: the reality of decay on a weathered wall and the reflection of buildings. These two realms become one in an instant, with Heijnen using just a camera and a clear glass panel. There is no reliance on any digital trickery: the images are not photoshopped nor are they double exposures. All photos are single shots simply capturing what is actually there, at that very moment.

My art is in an area between photography and painting. The Residue pieces are not as direct as photography, they’re more subjective,” Heijnen says. “This is deliberate – I want to move away from photographic realism to leave more room for emotion and interpretation.”

Lovestruck Does District 10 – 17 May 2012

The Lovestruck Laissez-faires the hottest free ticket in town for single professionals. Come along to our free-for-all-to-attend after work drinks.

Every so often, we ‘ghost-host’ drinks nights. This means that we won’t make a big thing about being there. Or a small thing. We’ll just… be. (It’s terribly zen.) So there’s no entry fee, no RSVP, no nametags, no games and no rules.

All you need to know is that Lovestruckers and their single friends/colleagues will be there on that particular night.

Simply ask for a red straw (entirely optional), drink and let some gorgeous Lovestrucker spot your straw and chat

you up. (Or chat up someone with a straw, if you’re feeling proactive.)

So tell all your single friends/colleagues and bring a friend/colleague or five. They don’t have to be a Lovestrucker. They don’t even have to be single. Hell, they don’t even have to be your friend. That’s the beauty of this night, baby. It’s all about meeting like-minded single professionals in a relaxed, informal way.

Turn up as early as possible to guarantee entry.

Singapore, a Paradise for Foodies!

- FindYourWayInSG would like to tell you more about food in Singapore -

One situation you might never find yourself in is staying hungry in Singapore. There are countless places to eat, ranging from fine-dining restaurants to bistros, cafes and food courts (kopitiam, hawker, nasi-kandar etc). Going out for a meal will become an essential part of your stay on the island and you will enjoy the many choices, both local

and international tasteful delights.

Singapore is a place where migration and resettlement is happening at a rapid speed and the food culture reflects this. Here, people come together to eat and to experience notions of home or cultural otherness at the same time. Most Singaporeans are “foodies” and they can give you recommendations of restaurants and food centres that are worth paying a visit to.

The best place to explore the Singaporean variety of food is a hawker centre. It is a big open-air place and found nearby public housing and transport. The centres often consist of more than 100 food stalls offering meals and snacks with Chinese, Malay, North or South Indian and even Western influences. The different colours, aromas and delicious tastes make it hard to take a choice.

Relax, grab a glass of sugarcane juice and order as many snacks and mains as you can. The food is inexpensive – often less than SGD$5 – and freshly cooked. Long queues of hungry people in front of the stall, pinned awards or newspaper articles on the walls are signs for a “shiok” tasty fare. The hawkers highly compete against each other and there are even websites and blogs where you can vote for your favourite food stalls. One example is myhawkers. It is also an interactive web portal that offers useful information on hawker centres and food stalls.

Hawker centres are typically found near public housing estates (HDB), typically known as the heartlands, or transport hubs (such as bus interchanges or train stations). Some of the most famous hawker centres are Changi Village Food Centre, East Coast Seafood Centre, Geylang Serai Market & Food Centre, Ghim Moh Market & Food Centre, Jurong West Hawker Centre, Maxwell

Food Centre, Newton Food Centre, Old Airport Cooked Food Centre, Seah Im Food Centre, and Tiong Bahru Food Centre.

Don’t get confused if you see a pack of tissues or umbrellas lying around on empty tables. It is the Singaporean way to reserve – to “chope” – a place. Hawker centres are often crowded and it is advisable to look for a table first and to tell the hawker the designated number on it, so you do not need to wait in front of the stall. And you can search for more dishes and drinks to fill up your empty stomach.

Do not miss to taste the favourite dishes of the locals:

  • Chicken Rice,
  • Bak Chor Mee (minced meat noodles with meat or fish balls),
  • Laksa (spicy noodle soup),
  • Beef Noodle,
  • Fried Carrot Cake,
  • Hokkien Noodles (noodles served with pork, seafood and Chinese vegetables),
  • Indian Curry,
  • Roti Prata (Indian pancake),
  • Satay (Malay BBQ meat on stick),
  • Mee Siam (Nonya delicacy “Siamese noodle”),
  • Mee Rebus (Singaporean style “boiled noodles”),
  • Nasi Lemak (Malay coconut rice dish with a variety of side orders),
  • Char Kway Teow (literally “stir-fried rice-cake strips”, is a popular noodle dish),
  • and of course the famous Chili Crab!

Enjoy your meal!

Held in conjunction with Singapore Arts Festival, Public Garden will be extended from its usual one-day event and held over three weekends. Expect eight days of full-fledged fun at Public Garden under the Esplanade Bridge, from 5pm to midnight, in collaboration with National Arts Council.

Public Garden Flea Market will be part of Singapore Arts Festival’s Festival Village, which will include pop-up restaurants and live performances by Singapore’s best local acts. Ongoing exhibitions and installations will be happening at the Esplanade, a stone’s throw away from the flea market.
